We are now working on Unit 8 in Math. In this unit we will be learning about fractions. Unit 8 focuses on the following concepts: *Equal
parts of one Please look for the Family Letter that comes home at the beginning of each chapter. These will be useful in helping your child understand the concepts of the chapter and nightly homework. Your child will be having Fast Facts homework twice a week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, a blue paper with 30 addition facts will come home for homework. The goal is for your child to finish this sheet in 70 seconds or less. If they do not finish it in that amount of time, please continue to complete the page. On Wednesdays and Fridays, your child will be given a quiz on the same facts. They will have 70 seconds to complete this. Here are two websites filled with great math games for your child to practices their skills http://www.funbrain.com/numbers.html http://www1.center.k12.mo.us/Edtech/edm/2.htm (This page is filled with all of the Everyday Math Games we play in class! Great practice!)
We will continue to work in our small groups during Guided Reading. We have learned so many reading strategies to help us become better readers. In the beginning of the year, we learned about different strategies to use when we come to an unknown word. Now, we are so excited about doing Reader's Workshop. We have our own "book nooks" around the room to read in. We are learning all kinds of strategies to help us understand the story better. We have learned about metacognition, schema and visualizing! Now we have moved onto questioning. We are learning how important it is for our minds to "bubble over" with questions while we read.
We will also be reading some St. Patrick's Day books and completing some fun activities this month.
We continue to love Writer's Workshop! It is one of our favorite times of the day and we often get sad sighs we it is time to stop writing. This month we will continue to add "snapshots" to our writing. This is when we tell about an important object in lot of detail. We will also learn how to effectively use dialogue in our stories. In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, we will be writing stories about what we would do if we found a pot of gold! We can't wait to hear all of the great things everyone would do with their new found gold! This month, we will also be doing a writing project called March into Writing. Each night, your child will bring home a different writing prompt to complete for homework. This is a great chance for the students to practice all of the things they have learned about writing this year, such as indenting, capital letters, punctuation, good openings and closings and proper paragraph formation.
Our next unit in Science is a class favorite...dinosaurs! We will be learning about when the dinosaurs lived, what they ate, and many more exciting facts.
In
Social Studies, we will be learning about the six pillars of good
character! We will also be celebrating Women's History Month by learning about famous Americans such as Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Anne Frank and Eleanor Roosevelt.
